The Bargarh Dhanuyatra is renowned as the world's largest open-air theater festival, annually transforming Bargarh, Odisha, into the mythical kingdom of Mathura. The 77th edition of this grand festival took place from January 3 to January 13, 2025, captivating audiences with its vibrant enactment of Lord Krishna's early life and his confrontation with King Kansa.
Over 11 days, the festival dramatizes episodes from Lord Krishna's life, including his birth, childhood pranks, and the ultimate defeat of his tyrannical uncle, King Kansa. The entire town becomes a stage, with different areas representing various locations from the epic tale.
Mathura Nagari: The main municipality area of Bargarh transforms into Mathura, the capital city ruled by Kansa.
Gopapura: The nearby village of Ambapali becomes Gopapura, depicting the pastoral life of young Krishna.
Yamuna River: The Jeera River is symbolically turned into the Yamuna, playing a significant role in various scenes.
Originating in 1947, the Dhanuyatra symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and has been accorded the status of a National Festival by the Government of India.
The festival is a collective endeavor, with local residents actively participating as actors, stage designers, and organizers, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Odisha.
