The Konark Dance Festival is a mesmerizing annual event held in the backdrop of the magnificent Sun Temple in Konark, Odisha. This festival celebrates India’s rich classical dance traditions, bringing together renowned dancers and artists from across the country.
The festival takes place in an open-air auditorium near the UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Sun Temple, an architectural marvel dedicated to Surya, the Sun God. The temple’s stunning sculptures and carvings provide a divine setting for the performances.
The festival features captivating performances of India’s major classical dance forms, including:
Odissi – The dance form of Odisha, known for its graceful movements.
Bharatanatyam – The classical dance of Tamil Nadu, known for its expressions and rhythmic footwork.
Kathak – The storytelling dance of North India, blending rhythm and grace.
Kuchipudi – A vibrant dance form from Andhra Pradesh.
Manipuri, Mohiniyattam, and Sattriya – Other traditional dances showcasing diverse Indian cultures.
Each performance is accompanied by live classical music, featuring traditional instruments like the mardala, tabla, sitar, and flute, creating a soul-stirring ambiance.
The festival also features exhibitions of Odisha’s famous handicrafts, handlooms, and sculptures, including Pattachitra paintings and appliqué work from Pipili.
